Haikou is a city with uncontaminated ecological environment. It is also noted as "a coconut city" or "a pearl on the treasure island" for its graceful coconut palms and fascinating sea scenery. It was called Haikou town during the early years of the Republic of China (1912-1949) and became a city in 1926. On June 1, 1950, the Haikou City Government was established. It became the provincial capital when Hainan province was established in 1988. Haikou is located in the southernmost part of China, in an area that reaches from Zengmu Ansha in the south to the Qiougzhou Straits in the north; bordering the sea areas south of China Sea and facing Viet Nam in the west across Beibu Bay. Haikou is located in the north part of low latitude tropical zone; monsoon climate, frost-free period of 346 days; no severe coldness in winter. Average Temperature: 23.8C annually with the highest of 28.0C and the lowest of 18.8C Haikou City lies in the north latitude of 19° 57'04?-20° 05'11?and in the east longitude of 110° 10'18?-110° 23'05?. Located in the north of Hainan Island, the north of Haikou is close to Qiongzhou Strait, opposite to Hai'an Town of Guangdong Province with the intervention of 15-seamile Guangdong Sea; its Northwest faces the sea, opposite to Qiongshan City,separated by Nandu River in the east, adjacent to Qiongshan City, Chengmai county separately in the south and the southwest. Land of Haikou extends about 25 km between Pandan in the east and Fengnan in the west. The south gets up in Cangxi and reaches the sea in the north, both ends stands 15 km apart. The city has a total land area of 236.44 sq km, including 33.64 sq km of constructed urban area. The sea area of Haikou is of 530 sq km and the area of the layout for the urban land is 1127 sq km. Population in Haikou is 830,192.
